The Voynich manuscript has currently not been analyzed by scholars of Baltic, Slavic or Tatar languages. In any online copy of British or French encyclopedias or books on countries of the world from the 16th and 17th centuries, Tartaria as a country encompassing present-day central and eastern Russia is listed. In the 15th century, Tartaria encompassed the central and eastern parts of present-day Russia, and possibly stretched into Alaska and other parts of America. The document likely is written in a language which contains Baltic, Turkic and Slavic influences. My personal belief is that this document is from Tartaria, which was a giant empire which encompassed present-day Russia. I strongly suspect that the document contains words in a Baltic language as well, but have not had a chance to look at it.īesides the language it is written in, the content of the document is also mysterious.įor example, sunflowers are depicted and described in the manuscript, although sunflowers were not known in Western Europe until the 1500s, when Spaniards brought them to Europe from Mexico. In 2007, Austrian researcher Andreas Schinner even concluded that the manuscript must be a hoax, and in 2019, Schinner published a paper with Torsten Timm describing an algorithm that could have been used by a medieval author to generate meaningless text consistent with the text found in the Voynich manuscript. Part of the reason it has confused scholars for so long can be attributed to the fact that most scholars who have attempted to decipher it have been American and Western European (this includes British code-breakers from World War II, who unsuccessfully tried to “crack the code” of the manuscript), who had little to no knowledge of non-Western European languages.įor example, some scholars believed that the manuscript must be written in a fabricated artificial language, as grammatical markings (such as the addition of “s” at the end of a word in English to make it plural) are not present in the text.
